Saintes Our nearest town has a Roman Amphitheatre, the Roman Arc de Germanicus, Cathédrale St Pierre, Eglise St Eutrope, daily market (apart from Monday – “Grand Foire on the 1st Monday of each month), pedestrianised shopping area with cafes and restaurants, and the lovely River Charente for fishing and boat trips in summer. Beaches A
half-hour drive will get you to Royan, St Georges de Didonne, and
just a little further, the charming seaside towns of Vaux-sur-Mer, St
Palais-sur-Mer and Pontaillac. Beyond there is La Grande Côte
with beautiful sandy beaches, and after La Palmyre (which has a
wonderful Zoo - see the link below), the coast stretches north on
the Côte Sauvage, a stunning wild coastline worth visiting. Talmont
La Rochelle With it’s beautiful restaurant lined harbour, fine aquarium and shopping 55 minutes away, a "must see" town. Ile de Ré Next to La Rochelle, and over the water by a toll bridge, this island has much to offer, including its' "capital", St Martin, a pretty town with a restaurant lined harbour, ideal for lunch or dinner. Cognac 40 minutes drive away, you can here visit the famous houses of Martell, Otard, Hennesey, Remy Martin, Courvoisier etc or just wander through the streets of the old town, or along the banks of the River Charente. Bordeaux
can be reached in less than 90 minutes by Autoroute and
“Park and Ride” Tram from the city outskirts, or by train direct
from Saintes station.
